For the Short Answer questions you must be able to connect broad time periods and historical events. Here is a sampling of common short answer topics. Some of these MAY be on the test, but also MAY NOT be.

- Native Americans before Columbus
- Comparing different colonial empires
- The Columbian Exchange/Triangle Trade
- Revolutionary Period (1754-1800)
- Causes and Consequences of the American Revolutionary War
- America under the Articles of Confederation and transition to the Constitution
- Early Republic (1800-1848)
- Republican values (motherhood, education, etc.)
- Republican politics (Political parties and events of the era, don't forget about the Whigs!)
- Social issues (Second Great Awakening --> Reform Movements)
- Slavery
- The Civil War (1848-1877)
- Causes and Consequences of the Civil War
- Reconstruction
- Industrial America (1865-1900)
- The Frontier and the West (Native Americans & American exceptionalism)
- Rise of the City (changes in technology & society)
- Industrialization (Factories and labor unions)
