Hello ladies and gentlemen,

First for those of you who are taking the PSAT today...good luck!  I know that the number of students in class today will be low, so we are watching a movie!  We will be watching the film Amistad (see the description below).  For those of you who miss the film I would recommend trying to watch it outside of class if you are able, if not review the 19th century case of the Amistad and be prepared to discuss in class.  Below you will find our agenda, homework, and resources for the day.

Agenda:
  1. Watch the film Amistad
    1. Those of you who are UNABLE or UNWILLING to watch the film must return the Amistad permission slip form
    2. An alternative activity will be provided for those of you who do not watch the film
      1. Alternative Activity
        1. Answer the questions below using complete sentences and paragraphs.  Be detailed and provide citations as well as a bibliography for where you found your information.
          1. Briefly summarize the case of United States v. The Amistad

          2. What position did President Martin Van Buren regarding the case of the Amistad?  Why did he take this position?
          3. Some abolitionists wished to see the Africans from the Amistad executed, martyred for the cause, believing that this would have advanced the cause of abolitionism further than their release.  Do you think there is justification for this belief?  What do you think was the "right" thing to do?
          4. Describe the Spanish government's role in the case of the Amistad.  Why did they have such a high interest in the case?  Do you think they were frustrated with how the American court system worked?
          5. What was the legal basis cited by the court for the freeing of the Amistad Africans?
          6. What were the moral ramifications of the case?  Given the historical context of the United States in the 1830s and 1840s, why was the country interested in seeing the outcome of this case?  What regional differences were intensely vested in the case?
          7. How significant do you think the case of the Amistad was in 19th century American history?  Explain.
    3. We will be answering some Discussion Questions while watching the film

September 17 - 153rd Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

Just as a random fact about today, it marks the 153rd Anniversary of the Battle of Antietam fought on September 17, 1862.  The Battle of Antietam is the bloodiest single day in American History.  This is partially because both sides who fought in the battle were considered American (Civil War --> North Vs. South).  Below are some interesting facts about the Battle of Antietam to mark this day.

Battle of Antietam Facts:
  1. Relative Strengths of the Two Armies
    1. Union Army of the Potomac - 75,000
    2. Confederate Army of Northern Virginia - 38,000
  2. Casualties in a single day
    1. Union - 12,401
      1. 2,108 killed
      2. 9,540 wounded
      3. 753 captured/missing
    2. Confederate - 10,316
      1. 1,546 killed
      2. 7,752 wounded
      3. 1,018 captured/missing
  3. Compared to Other American Battles (Killed in Battle)
    1. Battle of Meuse-Argonne (World War I) - 26,277 in 47 days
    2. Battle of the Bulge (World War II) - 19,276 in 41 days
    3. Battle of Okinawa (World War II) - 12,513 in 82 days
    4. Battle of Gettysburg (Civil War) - 7,863 in 3 days
    5. Battle of Guadalcanal (World War II) - 7,099 in 186 days
    6. Battle of Iwo Jima (World War II) - 6,821 in 35 days
    7. Battle of Antietam (Civil War) - 3,624 in ONE Day
  4. Tactical Draw (Battle was a Tie) but strategic victory for the Union (North)
    1. Allowed President Lincoln to issue Emancipation Proclamation
  5. Battle of Antietam produced more American casualties than the American Revolution, War of 1812, and Mexican War combined!
Hope you found this interesting!  Today is also Constitution Day! Fitting don't you think?  We have been talking about the Constitution for the past couple of weeks!

Also just a little piece of Military History for those of you interested.  Here is a chart illustrating the size of the U.S. military over history

August 14

Hello ladies and gentlemen,

So today in class we accomplished a lot of things (hopefully!).  We reviewed my expectations, tips, and tricks to reading and taking notes from the textbook.  We discussed the AP readings (for AP students only).  And then we began our discussion of historiography with an activity designed to have you examine two historiographical perspectives.  Below you will find the agenda.

  1. Recap: "Why Study History?" discussion
  2. Review: Unit 1 Assignment Sheet
  3. Warm-Up #1
  4. Skill Building: Cornell Notes (Here are some Cornell Note Taking Sheets if you would like to use them)
    1. Remember that Reading Notes must be hand done!
    1. We will discuss different note taking strategies and remember that your Chapter 1 Reading Notes are due on Monday!
  5. Read and discuss: Historiography
    1. For this assignment you will need to make a copy for yourself in order to complete online
      1. After you have opened the link select File --> Make a Copy
      2. Retitle your copy "P(your period)_LastNameFirst Initial_Historiography"
      3. Complete the portion of the assignment that you were assigned (Zinn or Johnson) and come to class ready to share/discuss on Monday
  6. Closure: #1
The only Homework this weekend is to finish reading Chapter 1 (and complete your Chapter 1 Notes) and study for the Chapter 1 Quiz on Monday!  The Chapter 1 Quiz will consist of 10 Document Based Multiple-Choice Questions, and one short answer.  It should take no longer than 20 minutes!  I will check your notes on Monday during the Quiz (Yes you DO get to use your notes on the quiz).

I hope that you are all enjoying the course so far.  I know its a lot of work but if you stick with it you will do well and all will be OK.  I believe it all of you!

Have a wonderful weekend!  If you have any questions email me.

Live long and prosper,

Mr. Marchetti
